Do you have a mentor?

Yesterday was Veterans Day and I want to send out a salute to all veterans, current and future. This day always makes me think back fondly on my military days and the wonderful men and women I had the honor to serve with as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

One of the most exhilarating experiences I had was being able to take a flight in an F-16 with my first military mentor. He went on to become a 4-star general (and we're still in contact). I learned a lot about leadership, mentorship, teamwork and service from him. I was a very junior officer and I remember how he used to always put aside whatever he was working on when I came to him with a question. I remember thinking that if I ever was in the position to mentor others, I would hope to be as good a mentor as he'd been to me. I've been fortunate to have a lot of great mentors over the years (military and civilian) and I'm grateful to be in a position now to do so for others.

Do you have a mentor?  Are you a mentor?  What do you think makes a good mentor?
