Why You Should Never Make New Year's Resolutions

It's that time of year again.  The time when one year is closing out and a fresh, new one is about to begin.  It's a shiny, purposeful time of year when people start planning how they're going to make this new year "the one" that will make all the difference in their lives.

But sadly, by about Feb 1st, the shimmer of those New Year's Resolutions starts to fade.  The goals that were plugged into smartphones or calendared into apps have gotten pushed to the bottom of the proverbial pile along with the bones of Resolutions of Years Gone By.

That's why I say you should never make New Year's Resolutions.  At least NOT until you've done these three things first...

But before I tell you what they are, here's a little insight.  You see, most people don't get what they want--they don't achieve their goals--because they don't really know what they want.  And without knowing what they really want, they can't take the meaningful actions that will create the momentum to get from where they are to where they want to be.  That's why so many people fall short and off the wagon by Feb 1st.

So how do you know what you really want?  Do this first:

Sound easy?  Maybe.  What's required is that you put some serious thought into making these lists.  Once you've done so, then you can work on making your New Year's Resolutions or setting those all-important goals.  When you work from these lists to develop your goals and resolutions, you'll have the clarity to see the bigger picture and how your action (or inaction) will affect your eventual outcome.

So take the time to write out your 20 Things lists and then get to work on your New Year's Resolutions.  Make this "the year" you actually achieve what you set out to do.

Wishing you all the best in this bright and shiny New Year!
