Stop Focusing On Your Failures
In order to more fully stand in your power and live a life that lights you up, you have to train yourself to stop thinking about why you've failed and instead look at your patterns of success. We all have a natural tendency to focus on and remember in more detail negative events because negative events have a greater impact on our brains than positive ones.
"Because negative information causes a surge in activity in a critical information processing area of the brain, our behaviors and attitudes tend to be shaped more powerfully by bad news, experiences, and information." (Excerpt from "What is the Negativity Bias" by Kendra Cherry.)
So knowing we have a pre-disposition for processing and spending more time thinking about negative events, we have to consciously shift our thoughts to focus on our successes rather than our failures, disappointments, or hurts. This is a key element of learning how to stand in your power.
For example, if I asked you to quickly write down five negative events that happened to you within the past two weeks, you could probably come up with a list fairly easily. (Go ahead and try it!) But now try to write down five positive events that happened to you within the past two weeks. Did it take you longer to do?
We can't always stay in a positive mindset. It's natural to slip into negativity. The key is recognizing where you are and taking steps to shift your thoughts. One of the things I recommend is building a personal database of your successes and happier outcomes--no matter how large or small, remembering your wins can help you remember who you are and what you stand for. And therein lies your power. (Yes, you are a bada$$.)
Focus on your successes, not your failures. Look into the patterns that helped you succeed. Remember who you are and how strong you are. And remember what drove you to succeed.
You got this!
